One of the major ‘Development through Sport’ agenda that Magic Bus has set out for itself, includes helping children understand the importance of issues related to health and hygiene both at the personal and at the neighborhood level. Magic Bus believes that through awareness and preventive measure diseases can be prevented.

Some achievements:
  • 70% Magic Bus children acknowledge the importance of boiling water before use.
  • 69% Magic Bus children have knowledge of personal hygiene (hand-washing, open defecation and link between cleanliness and good health).
  • 95% Magic Bus children are awareness on harmful effects of addictions while 85% do not have any addictions.
  • 79% of Magic Bus children are aware of the ill effects of spitting and littering and 40% children share with their friends what they learn at Magic Bus with regard to spitting, littering and using foul language.
  • 75% of the Magic Bus children have been involved in some kind of cleanliness activity in the community.
Anecdote: “Once, there was a lot of garbage strewn around near the garbage bin, so we called the municipality and got them to come and clear the garbage. Also, on 15 August, flags were strewn all over the ground. So my friend and I collected all the flags from all over and took them to the police chowki. I learned about this from Magic Bus – if there is disrespect to the flag we can go to the police station. The policeperson there was also very appreciative – “usne shabashi di (he congratulated us)”. Bhaiya (mentor) not just plays with us but also tell us how important it is to keep our surroundings clean. He tells us about good habits. Also I enjoy playing with the football.”
