Right to Play
  • 95% of Magic Bus children acknowledge that each child has a Right to Play.

  • All Magic Bus children are getting a minimum guarantee of at least 2 hours of play every week, as compared to 22% of non-Magic Bus children who do not get to play at all. Further, 43% of the Magic Bus respondents have Magic Bus as the only avenue to play.

  • In Mumbai, Magic Bus has been able to create access for children to 14 grounds over the past 6 years. Initially, Magic Bus had to pay rent for the grounds but today Magic Bus pays for only 3 grounds.

  • 73% Magic Bus children show positive attitude towards the losing team; children at Magic Bus seem to have a better outlook than children in the control group with respect to sports in their belief that “winning at any cost is not the most important thing” and “to have positive attitude towards the losing side”. This shows that Magic Bus children are able to view sports not as an event between two teams, but as events that foster community belongingness.

  • The girls and boys get the following number of hours to play a week:

Age MB Boys Non MB Boys MB Girls Non MB Girls
12-14 years 12.5 17.5 9 3.5
15-18 years 23 26.25 2 0

Case study: “This is the first time, I have got an opportunity to play with the ball”, says Vikas, 9, living in a slum in Kurnool town, Andhra Pradesh. Both his parents are infected with HIV. His father passed away a year ago and mother works as a domestic help to sustain the family. When MB contacted his mother, she was reluctant to send the child because of the social discrimination faced, but agreed on consistent request from MB volunteer. The child started attending the S4D session. He was thrilled to joined S4D session, for he could never play at school because there were no sports teachers.
