About Kurnool District

Alamura is a rural area in Nandyala cluster of Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. The village is home to a population of 2342 persons distributed across 583 households. Most of the residents speak Telugu and belong to a Schedule Caste, Madiga. Majority of the population in the village falls below the poverty line and most of the families practice agriculture. The nearest primary health centre and hospital is approximately 10kms from Alamur and the nearest college is nearly 15kms away.

Magic Bus has been working in the community since 2011 and one of the primary issues we faced is lower participation of girls in the programme due to deep-rooted beliefs in the community about the traditional roles of women and girls. Currently there are 30 children involved in our programme, out of these 13 are girls and 17 are boys.

Identifying Community Youth Leaders in the village is a challenge and at the moment we have one Community Youth Leader implementing the sessions. In order to involve more youth as a part of our programme we are planning to conduct youth meetings to spread awareness and motivate them to be a part of the programme. We also conduct sports tournaments for youth in order to build a good rapport and help identify more Community Youth Leaders in the village.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held once every week on Sundays between 9.30 and 11.30am. Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
