About Kurnool District

Atmakur Bustand is home to a population of 956 persons distributed across 215 households. A majority of its inhabitants belong to a single social group, the Yerikulas, who are enlisted as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in Andhra Pradesh. Telugu is the spoken language. 92 percent of the households fall below the poverty line.

Agriculture is the primary source income. Other livelihood options are knitting of bamboo baskets for sale and running roadside fruit stalls. A primary health centre is located in the vicinity. The nearest hospital is at least 2km away. A school and college are also located nearby.

Magic Bus began working in this community since 2014. This community is infamous for involving children into knitting baskets which frequently results in them dropping out of school. Our work has been primarily aimed at helping the community understand the importance of education so that they encourage their children to go to school instead of involving them in such household activities.

At present, we have 26 children on our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
