About Delhi

Bakkarwala, Block-G is a resettlement colony of around 15 years old. Residents don’t have much opportunity of employment. Women work as domestic workers. There is a high incidence of child labour with children opting for rag picking to support their families. Lack of gainful employment drive youth in the community towards a life of hopelessness and depression. Most of the youth in this community take to substance abuse.
When Magic Bus started working here on October 2011, we observed that most girls were not allowed to play outside their homes. This was one of the reason why we decided to intensify our interventions in this community - so that we can address the root cause of this discrimination by making public spaces open to young girls.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

To address the issue of unemployment and disillusionment among the youth in this community, we have had 10 youth joining our Livelihood Centre at Nangloi.

Magic Bus sessions here are divided into three parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
