About Delhi

Bakkarwala, Block-G (III) is almost 15 years old. A resettlement colony, this community is a mix of various religions.

Residents do not have access to gainful employment. Child labour is rampant with most children working as rag-pickers. Left without a means to employment opportunities, most youth resort to substance abuse.

In October 2011, when Magic Bus began its intervention in this area girls were not allowed to step outside and play alongside boys. Things have changed for better in this community now. Perceptions about girls' freedom and education have undergone some changes as well

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:Importance of personal and environmental hygiene:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
