Trilokpuri is a large locality in East Delhi, near Dharamshala Hospital. The locality is split into blocks, each of which house approximately 500 families.
Most of the residents of this locality are employed with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Others are small-time business owners and shopkeepers. Literacy rates in this locality are high.
Block 13 in Trilokpuri has well-built homes with decent sanitation facilities, water supply and electricity, with occasional water and power cuts. The drains here are functional but open, so they get flooded at times causing sanitation issues.
Magic Bus started operations in Trilokpuri in 2009. The biggest issue faced by the Magic Bus staff is the reluctance of parents to send their daughters outside to play, because of concerns about girls’ safetly. The staff is working hard to change this through regular meetings with the parents and encouragement to the girls in the locality.
There are around 2,000 children in the programme at Trilokpuri. Three Youth Mentors look after operations here. Although 1,100 girls are enrolled in the programme, they’re not always allowed to attend the sessions.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
Magic Bus sessions are conducted in Block 13, Trilokpuri, in the mornings and evenings and are divided into three parts:
