About Delhi

To the north-west of New Delhi and approximately ten minutes from the Mundka metro station is Block-A, Bakkarwala, a slum cluster with nearly 3,500 inhabitants and 726 houses. Sanitation is a major concern for the people living here. Due to lack of public toilets, residents often have to resort to open defecation, thereby, exposing themselves to a host of other health hazards.

Mostly migrants, the people of Block-A Bakkarwala are employed as daily wage labourers.

Magic Bus sessions started at Bakkarwala in September 2011.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays every week, from 4.00pm to 5.30pm, and are divided into three parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
