About Delhi

Block-E, Lakkarpur, is situated near Pehladpur, and has a population of around 2,000. People from this community mainly work as daily-wage labourers. This is a sharp contrast to the nearby Pehladpur, where residents are small business owners and government employees.

Around 60% of the houses are pucca and are equipped with toilets. The rest are kaccha houses with no toilets, and families living in these have to resort to open defecation. This poses a serious health hazard for residents in the community.

There is adequate water supply which is a major relief for the families.

Children go to a government school in the nearby Railway Colony. Girls are not allowed to go out or participate in any activities, and are encouraged to help with domestic chores.

Magic Bus started operations in Block-E, Lakkarpur, in April 2014. There are around 60 children in the programme so far. Of these, only 18 are girls. This alarming statistic is the first issue that the Magic Bus team is planning to address.

As the programme here is in its initial stages, children have not yet started attending sessions regularly. Magic Bus is identifying and training Community Youth Leaders who will conduct Sport for Development sessions every week. Meanwhile, meetings are being conducted regularly with parents in the community to educate them about the programme and the importance of sports.

Sport for Development sessions are held on Saturdays and Sundays. The main focus currently is rapport building for children in the community. Magic Bus sessions last for two hours and are conducted in three stages:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
