Magic Bus' work in this community is made possible with the support of our donor, Lalit Laungani.
Thank you Lalit!
Block-F, Lakkarpur, is near Pehladpur, and has a population of around 2,000. People from this community mainly work as daily-wage labourers. This community is in sharp contrast to the nearby Pehladpur, where residents are small business owners and government employees.
Around 70% of the houses are pukka and have toilets, but the rest are kuccha houses with no toilets and families living in these have to resort to open defecation. Hygiene is a major issue in this community. There is adequate water supply in the community, which is a huge relief for families.
Children go to a government school in the nearby Railway Colony. Girls are not allowed to go out and participate in any activities.
Magic Bus started operations in Block F, Lakkarpur in April 2014. The Magic Bus team wants to work on reducing the incidence of gender inequality in this locality. Currently, there are around 60 children enrolled in our programme. Of these, only around 18 are girls. This alarming statistic is the first issue that the staffs are planning to address.
The main focus at present is rapport building in the community. Since the programme here is in its initial stages, children are not regular in attending sessions. This is also because of the fact that Community Youth Leaders haven’t been recruited yet. Magic Bus is identifying and recruiting youth from the locality who will volunteer as Community Youth Leaders.
Meetings are conducted regularly with parents with an aim to educate them about the programme and the importance of sports.
Magic Bus Sport for Development sessions are held for two hours each on Saturday and Sunday, and are conducted in three stages:
