About Delhi

Block G, Bawana is located in the North-West district of Delhi. This block is situated near the Bawana Power House.

The population is around 5,000 of which around 2,000 are children. The locality has 1,000 jhuggis.

Most of the men from this community work as daily-wage labourers in factories, or as shopkeepers and vegetable/fruit vendors. Women work as domestic help or daily-wage earners in silayi centres. Some make small handicrafts at home.

There is water scarcity in the community and hand-pumps are out of order. Only around 40% of the population has toilets in their homes. The rest use community toilets. The sewer lines are often choked and sweepers do not work regularly.

Magic Bus started operations in Block G, Bawana, in 2013. The programme covers 100 children, of which 40 are girls. Shanu Sheikh, 23 is the Training and Monitoring Officer in charge of the community. Assisting Shanu is a 22-year-old Youth Mentor, Anita.

A football tournament was organised for children in the community in December 2013. Post the event, TOMS shoes were distributed to participants.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
