About Kurnool District

Bukkapuram in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh is home to a population of 1752 persons. Residents belong to a dominant caste group of Andhra Pradesh, the Kammas. They speak Telugu and practise Hinduism. Most of the households in this locality are made of cement and bricks or what is known as pucca houses in India.

The predominant livelihood option in this area is agriculture-based. While a school lies in the vicinity of this rural community, the youth here has to travel for 8km to access the nearest government college. A primary health centre is located at a distance of 5km from the village while a hospital is located almost 8kms from this area.

Since it began its operations in 2011, our programme has continually faced challenges in the form of friction between local political factions. Our efforts have majorly been focussed towards ensuring the community comes together for the well-being of their children. Child labour is prevalent in this area with parents taking their children along to work in the field. Our efforts have been directed towards discouraging the community from adopting this practice.

At present, we have 60 children on our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held once every week on Sundays between 4.00 and 5.30pm.

Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
