About Kurnool District

Chinthakuntla in rural Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, is home to a population of 3,896 persons. Inhabitants mainly belong to a single social group, the Malas, who are enlisted as a Scheduled Caste in Andhra Pradesh. Telugu is the main language here. More than 95 percent of the households in this community fall below the poverty line.

Agriculture is the main source of income for people in Chinthakuntla. There is no primary health centre in the vicinity. The nearest government hospital is at a distance of 3km from the community. A school and a college are located at a distance of 1km and 3km respectively.

Magic Bus has been working in this community since 2011. One of the biggest behavioural challenges in this community has been the complete lack of awareness about cleanliness resulting in frequent illness and disease. We have been working towards improving the awareness of the community, particularly its children, on cleanliness. At present, there are 50 children in our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held once twice week on Sundays between 7.00 and 8.30pm, and Saturdays between 3.30 and 5.00pm.
Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
