About Kurnool District

Gonavaram is home to 1744 persons mostly belonging to the OBC group, Balija. Their predominant source of livelihood is agriculture. They speak Telugu and practise Hinduism. A majority of households in this settlement falls below the poverty line.

Accessibility to health infrastructure is underlined by the sheer distance (15kms) to the nearest Primary Health Centre and hospital from Gonavaram. The nearest government school is at a distance of 1km from the village but adolescent girls and boys have to travel a distance of 15kms for the nearest college at Panyam.

When Magic Bus began working in Gonavaram, there was no clean and safe space for children to play. Our staff mobilised a few influential persons within the community who owned land. With their help, the land was then cleaned and levelled to make it safe and suitable for children to play in.

We have 150 children in our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held twice on Sundays between 4.00 and 6.00pm in the evening, and 9.00 to 10.00am in the morning.

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
