About Kurnool District

With a population of 3,130 people, Gumpramandinne is a community located in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Almost all households here are mud-and-daub structures or what is locally known as kuchcha houses. Inhabitants largely belong to a single Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, Reddy. Telugu is the spoken language. Majority of the residents are Hindus. 

More than 95 percent of the 786 households in this area lie below the poverty line. Livelihood options are primarily agriculture-based. This community is located 4kms away from the nearest primary health centre and hospital. The nearest government school and college is at a distance of 4kms and 5kms respectively.

Magic Bus has been working in this community for the last four years. A recurrent challenge has been the lack of participation of girls in our mixed-gender sessions. This challenge is linked in deep-rooted societal attitudes towards the participation of women and girls in public spaces. Our programme has been working towards overcoming this attitudinal practise and ensuring girls and boys enjoy equal opportunity to play and learn.

At present, there are 113 children in our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held thrice every week on Wednesdays between 4.30 and 5.30pm, Tuesdays between 3.30 and 5.00pm, and Sundays between 3.00 and 4.30pm.
Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
