With a population of 10391 persons, Kota street is located in urban Nandyal in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Residents mostly belong to Balija, an OBC social group. Telugu is the spoken language. Most residents practise Hinduism. More than half of the households in Kota street fall below the poverty line.
Majority of residents are daily wage workers; a small number run roadside businesses. Many are also involved in bidi-making.
Owing to its urban location, the community is well connected to a primary health centre (1km away) and a government hospital (approximately 5kms away). A school and college is also located in the vicinity.
Magic Bus began working in this area in 2011. At present, we have 30 children participating in the programme. One of the biggest challenges in this area is around ensuring participation of children in our sessions and minimising dropouts. This is being addressed through community-engagement programmes.
