About Kurnool District

Kranthinagar in urban Nandyal of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, is home to 4,102 people distributed across 725 households. Inhabitants primarily belong to a single social group, the Blaijas, a Backward Class (BC) in Andhra. Telugu is the main language. 68 percent of the households lie below the poverty line.

Most of the residents are either into petty business, selling fruits and vegetables in street-side stalls or they take up odd jobs in the wholesale market of fruits and vegetables.

The nearest primary health centre and hospital are located 2km away from the community. Seasonal migration results in dropouts among children which affects their attendance in the sessions. We are working with the parents to see how to overcome this situation. At present, we have 30 children in our programme here. We have been working in this community since the last two years.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held every week on Sundays between 9.00 to 10.30am.
Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
