Maruthi Nagar is home to a population of 19,545 people and is located in the urban area of Nandyal in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Majority of residents belong to the Eediga caste, an Other Backward Classes (OBC) group. Telugu is the spoken language. Residents are mostly Hindus. 36 percent of the households here fall below the poverty line.
Residents either work as auto-drivers or run roadside vegetable shops. A small number of them are engaged in agricultural labour as well.
Maruthi Nagar is well-connected to primary health centres and hospitals. 5 schools (2 government and 3 private) are located in the vicinity. There are 4 colleges (3 private and 1 government) approximately 3kms away from this community.
Some of the problems that Magic Bus has faced during the last 5 years of working in the community is the widespread nature of alcoholism among youth here. This comes in the way of children’s participation in a Magic Bus session as the only open ground in the area is surrounded by liquour shops are are seen as unsafe for children. In order to sensitise the community, Magic Bus has planned a series of youth meetings to inform and encourage them to move away from alcohol and make the ground a safer space for children to learn and grow.
