About Delhi

Mubarakpur in Nangloi in the North-West Block (North-West Delhi District) is a small resettlement community. This 22-year old community is home to migrants from other states of the country.

Employment opportunities in Nangloi are limited and most men are involved in manual, daily wage labour. Women in this community support their families by working as domestic maids in nearby houses. Many children also work as rag pickers.

Magic Bus initiated its Sport for Development programme in Mubarakpur in November 2010 with Youth Mentor (YM) Poonam and 30 children. This enthusiastic Magic Bus employee generated goodwill and interest for Magic Bus by organising game sessions such as feather-touch that involved the community at large as a means to familiarise them with the power of sport.

The initial sessions introduced Magic Bus programmes and were received positively by the community.

With the help of 24 Community Youth Leaders (CYLs), Ponam was able to bring more than 430 children in the age group of 7-15 years to the Magic Bus programme. After receiving training from Magic Bus, all of the CYLs, who work as volunteers, concentrated on delivering key sessions that include messages to promote behaviour change amongst the children to bring about larger, positive changes in the community.

The programme’s key milestones have included: producing street plays to promote education awareness in the community, winning support from the community through their participation in local events such as tournaments, rallies and celebration of festivals, planning regular community visits and holding parents' meetings.

Magic Bus volunteers and mentors have delivered key messages that include:

  • Reading and writing are equally important for girls as they are for boys
  • It is important to attend school every day
  • It is okay for boys and girls to play and work together
  • It is very important for a child to be free from diseases like Jaundice and Hepatitis B

The sessions at Mubarakpur in Nangloi lasts for two hours and are divided into three parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
