Nandamoori Nagar is located in the urban area of Nandyal in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. With a population of 4959, most of the households in Nandamoori Nagar lie below the poverty line. Telugu is the spoken language. Residents are mostly Muslims. The predominant livelihood options in the area are: construction labour, auto-driving, and agricultural labour.
Although well-connected to health and education infrastructure, one of the biggest problems in this community has been the low participation among girls in public spaces. Magic Bus has been working in this community since 2014, and despite several meetings to engage community stakeholders and parents on the issue of participation of girls outside the home-space, there still continues to be deep-rooted beliefs regarding the realm a girl should occupy. The results of sustained engagement has been encouraging: out of the 60 children who are a part of the Magic Bus programme, 24 are girls. This shows the beginning of change in the attitudes and practices of the community.
