With a population of 10391 individuals Noonepalli is a large slum cluster in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Mala social group which is enlisted as a Scheduled Caste. The residents of this slum are mostly Hindus and speak Telugu. Nearly 2300 households in this community are below the poverty line.
Most of the residents of this area work as labourers in the nearby cotton and oil mills located in the vicinity. Some of the residents are scavenger workers with the Municipality. Public Health Centres and Hospitals are not very far, however hygiene and sanitation in the slum continues to be an issue, primarily due to the absence of a drainage system.
Apart from issues related to sanitation, the Magic Bus team initially faced behavioural challenges with the local youth in the community. However, after organising frequent youth meetings, there has been a change in their behaviour and the team has built a good rapport with the youth and community members.
The Magic Bus team plans to have frequent meetings with the youth and parents, to influence more positive behavioural changes and also plans to organize awareness meeting on health and sanitation by involving community members and influential members of the society.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
