About Kurnool District

Panyam is located in rural Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. It is a comparatively large village with a population of 14, 562 persons. Residents largely belong to one social group, the Boyas, who are listed among Andhra Pradesh’s Backward Classes (BCs). A large number of households are cement-and-brick structures or what is known as pucca houses in India.

64 percent of the 4, 418 households in this area lie below the poverty line. Agriculture is the primary occupation of people living here. Other livelihood options include fruit-vending and employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme (NREGS). This community is well-connected to a primary health centre, hospitals, schools and colleges.

Magic Bus has been working in this community since 2011. One of its challenges has been convincing parents to send their girls to the sessions. There is a great deal of discomfort among parents to send their girls outside the homes to mixed-gender sessions.

At present, we have 90 children in our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held once every week on Sundays between 4.00 and 6.00pm.
Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
