Magic Bus' work in this community is made possible with the support of our donor, Rajiv Luthra.
Thank you Rajiv!
Pratap Camp in Jal Vihar is an unregulated settlement in South Delhi, near the Lajpat Nagar Station.
There are 200-250 households. Although these are pukka homes, they do not have attached toilets. Residents have to resort to open defecation because of the lack of communal toilets, which makes the living conditions unhygienic.
Water is not supplied to the community owing to its illegal status. The community gets its water supply through water tankers.
The community is comprised largely of daily-wage labourers, sweepers and other unskilled workers. Children attend the government school nearby.
However, the lack of motivation to attend school has led to rising dropout rates, an issue Magic Bus is hoping to deal with.
Magic Bus operations in this community were stalled as the government started demolishing the colony because of its unregulated status. But this was halted after only a few homes were razed. Magic Bus resumes its programme at Pratap Camp in Jal Vihar in July 2014. The Training and Monitoring Officer in charge of this community is Irfan Khan. He is assisted by Youth Mentor Kuldeep Singh.
