About Delhi

A mixture of kutcha and pucca household dots the landscape of Press Lines located in northern part of Delhi.

The total population of this area is 5000. Residents are mostly Hindus and work as daily wage labourers.

Although the nearest educational institutions and health care systems are just one kilometre away, awareness and health seeking behaviour are some areas which need more work in order to ensure health and well-being for the people of this community.

Magic Bus began working in Press Lines from 2014. At present, we have 200 children in the programme.

When 17-year-old Parveen joined Magic Bus, he came across as an inordinately shy person. He used to avoid striking a conversation and was particularly wary of interacting with children.

" I lacked the energy and necessary social skills to interact them. I would be perpetually afraid of striking a conversation with any of my peers", recalls Parveen.

How was he selected to be a Community Youth Leader (CYL) then? " Our Youth Mentor bhaiya always had faith in me. He would encourage me to speak up and take leadership of the team since I was among the older ones", says Parveen.

It took a CYL training and several refreshers to make him understand the importance of his role as a Community Youth Leader (CYL). Parveen was motivated thinking that he could bring about some real changes in his neighbourhood. "I love being a leader. Every day I try to learn something new so that I can prove to be an effective role model for the children in this community", he signs off.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives
