About Delhi

With a large population of around 70,000 people, Loni comes partly under a municipality and partly under a Nagar Palika.

Most of Loni's inhabitants are Muslims. They are mostly daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, vegetable vendor, or rag pickers.

Like many other slum community in the capital, Loni's state of disenfranchisement is visible in the lack of basic amenities - like roads, drainage, and water. Most of the residents have never attended formal school putting there next generation at a risk of dropping out.

Although there are private and government schools in the vicinity, not many children in Loni attend school regularly or complete schooling.

This was the scenario when Magic Bus began working here almost 4 years ago. Sessions are held in two schools in the locality and six community settings.

Sanchit never enjoyed studying. He was in the sixth standard and would frequently give school a miss. When he went to school, he would either be found fighting with other boys of his age, or disturbing his classmates.

"I am quite surprised at the change that Magic Bus has brought about in me. And in a year's time. I was disobedient and negligent towards my studies. But now, after attending these sessions I have understood the value of education and good behaviour towards others. I like going to school these days. It does not seem like a compulsion", says Sanchit who is now in the seventh standard and just a year old in Magic Bus.
