About Delhi

Shakurpur is home to 3000 persons, mostly migrants from nearby states in search of work in the city. Residents are usually employed as daily wage labourers in nearby factories. About 33 per cent of the households in this community have a BPL card (Below Poverty Line).

Owing to its location in Delhi, Shakurpur is well-connected to both hospitals and schools.
Instead, some of the major issues of an urban slum cluster is visible here. Being surrounded by factories, makes this area prone to a high-level of pollution. In the absence of proper garbage disposal services, the area is vulnerable to diseases and infections affecting their overall wellbeing.

Magic Bus has been working on some of the issues facing this community since the last three years. At present, 250 children are a part of this transformational journey.

Gautam is 11 years old and studies in the seventh standard. He belongs to a family of seven. He and his four siblings are the first generation learners in the family since none of his parents have ever been to school. His father is a driver and earns Rs. 6000 per month.

Gautam started coming for our sessions since 2012. He came along with his sisters. He confesses that the sessions had a transformative impact on him. "I lacked confidence. I did not have the courage to speak up in front of others. But, being in Magic Bus changed that. We have visitors coming to watch our sessions every now and then. Interacting with them has helped me gain confidence", he says.

Gautam wants to study further and bring his family out of poverty.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
