About Kurnool District

Venkatapuram in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh is home to a population of 1,131 people. 90 percent of the households in this area are mud-and-daub structures or what is known as kuchcha housing in India. 57 percent of the households in this locality fall below the poverty line. The main source of income is agriculture-based work.

Magic Bus began working with this community in 2011. One of the toughest challenges facing the sessions in this area is the lack of participation among children due to issues of exclusion between the different castes in this area. The ground for the sessions is located in an area surrounded by upper caste households and is, therefore, considered out of bounds for the lower castes. With our continuous efforts to bring the different castes together, this particularly stiff challenge has been overcome to a great extent.

At present, there are 117 children on our programme here.

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Sessions are held three times every week on Sundays between 3.30 and 5.00pm in the afternoon and between 5.30 and 6.30pm in the evening;Tuesdays between 4.00 and 6.00pm, and Fridays between 5.00 and 6.00pm.

Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
