Department: Training

Location: Ahmedabad

The Role -

Lead all training in the Livelihood Centres for the Magic Bus Livelihood programme, which delivers skill training to youth and supports them into jobs and further education placements

  • Deliver a structured induction programme to each group of youth starting on the Livelihood programme

  • Lead all training in the Livelihood Centres for the Magic Bus Livelihood programme, which delivers skill training to youth and supports them into jobs and further education placements

  • Deliver Sports for Development activities to youth using Magic Bus curriculum and in house resources to engage youth successfully and enhance their learning

  • Deliver training content developed by Magic Bus national Programme Development Team and tailor this where necessary to the local context whilst ensuring session outcomes are delivered.

  • Ensure training outcomes are achieved in each session and youth receive consistent messages throughout all training interventions

  • Design an effective Livelihood Centre training timetable with the Centre Coordinator and ensure that this is constantly monitored and updated to enable youth to access the training they need

  • Apply and continuously develop innovative training techniques to make training more effective, fun and interactive

  • Undertake comprehensive needs assessments 1:1 with youth to identify their strengths & limitations, training and life skills needs and overall targets for the programme

  • Work in partnership with the Centre Coordinator or specialist career counsellors during the needs assessment to ensure youth have the impartial Information, Advice and Guidance that empowers them to make positive choices about potential careers

  • Act as the lead worker in the first phase of youth’s engagement with Magic Bus Livelihood programme and ensure all youth receive the full and proper offer during this time

  • Using the needs assessment and guidance findings support each youth to draw up a Personal Development Plan that contains the training activities and targets that they will work towards

  • Support youth to achieve the skills training, mentoring and employer activities outlined in their individual Personal Development Plans in partnership with the Placement and Partnership Officers who focus on referrals to employers and training institutions

  • Deliver a sharp focus on all training and counselling contributing to successful youth placement, training or further education and being able to sustain these for 6 months

  • Contribute to mapping institutions (government / NGO/ private and corporate foundations) that provide skills training opportunities in the local areas

  • Identify and respond to risks that could lead to youth dropping out of the programme.

  • Build strong and trusted relationships with youth from the start of their engagement with Magic Bus.

  • Undertake data collection and reporting duties that demonstrate the effectiveness of the Livelihood programme.

  • Act as a role model at all times demonstrating behaviour that displays the characteristics youth should develop to be successful in their chosen field.

Desired Competencies and Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in soft skills training and career counselling

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and local language; proficiency in English and non-verbal communication is mandatory

  • Strong digital learning skills for training others and for self-learning

  • Good facilitation skills and ability create classroom learning activities based on topic

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; and with all levels of staff, volunteers, and school authorities

  • Strong learning-to-learn skills for picking up new soft skills subject areas quickly

Department: Urban Recovery

Location: Ulhasnagar

No. of Positions: 1

The Role -

  • Lead the delivery of the Magic Bus Livelihood Urban Rapid Recovery programme at district level ensuring youth & out of work Adults engaged with the employment exchange and are successfully placed in work or training.

  • Lead the delivery of adolescent education intervention to support targeted families to improve regularity of adolescent in school.

  • Manage a team of Help desk executives, Community engagement Officers, Employer and Placement Officers who will deliver high quality interventions from mobilization through to successful placement and transition support ensuring a sharp focus on outcomes.

  • Manage partnerships at District level and contribute to strategic partnerships management at Regional and national levels.

  1. Manage Magic Bus resources (budgets & Office), staff and local partners to ensure the full offer of Urban Rapid Recovery programme is available to youth & out of work Adults in the district.

  2. Lead a team of staff at district level and manage all aspects of their performance.

  3. Lead critical project activities like Scoping study, Households mapping, Stakeholders mapping, etc.

  4. Achieve targets at each stage of intervention including mobilisation, boarding of youth & adults and employers, counselling and placement in work

  5. Support staff to do effective mobilisation of youth & adults, counselling, identification of their strengths & limitations, training and life skills needs and overall targets for the programme.

  6. Provide high quality career counseling and impartial Information, Advice and Guidance that empowers youth & out of work adults to make positive choices about potential careers.

  7. Oversee district level community need assessments and mapping exercises of other stakeholders in the local areas (government / NGO/ private and corporate foundations).

  8. Ensure district level staff record interventions and activities with youth & adults effectively and data is reported and analysed to improve the quality of work on ground

  9. Identify and respond to risks that could lead to youth & adults dropping out of the programme.

  10. Work with employers to ensure adequate placement opportunities exist at a local level for youth & adults registered in the programme.

  11. Documenting the best practices, Narrative reports, Case studies, and provide any other relevant update pertaining to the project.

  12. Work with colleagues in the Livelihood Programme teams at regional level to continuosly improve the quality of Magic Bus Livelihood (employment exchange and training) and ensure our work is always safe and enjoyable.
     

  13. Responsibilities with regards to Adolescent intervention:

  • Coordinate with all stakeholders: Education administrative officials, local School authorities, teaching staff, School Management committee and Municipal Councilor

  • Working closely with HR, Sr. Trainer to plan capacity building programs / trainings for resource persons and organize their training schedules during joining and refresher as and when required

  • Oversee delivery of life skill sessions by travelling to all respective locations on regular intervals

  • Coordinate with internal team of Resource persons & Program Development team for training of the Life skill educators and Community volunteers

  • Prepare and follow M& E plan for concurrent monitoring of process and progress

  • Ensure regular reporting to the Regional Director on the progress of the program periodically.

Desired Competencies:

  • Strong operational and team management skills that can be tailored to lead Magic Bus staff, on-ground partners, employers and local agencies.

Qualification and Experience (essential unless otherwise stated):

  • Relevant degree or similar professional qualification from a reputed institution. (Graduation is minimum qualification)

  • Experience of working with and achieving positive outcomes for disadvantaged youth , out of work adults and education intervention

  • Minimum 05 years of experience with 02 years managerial experience of frontline staff delivering interventions to youth and

  • Exposure to Govt. departments and their way of functioning (desirable)

  • Experience of handling Budget and doing financial and resource planning at local level.

  • Direct experience of career counselling and providing Information, Advice and Guidance to youth across a range of issues and education intervention.

The Role -

This position, along with the M&E Head and Director, will play a key role to inform and guide the Programme Development team, Operations team and Grant Manager on the pulse of the programme and on the effectiveness of the design, inputs, and methodology used to achieve the programme outputs and outcomes

  • To perform complete programme monitoring for the assigned districts according to the monitoring exercise plans on timely manner and to report on the effectiveness of the programme

  • Coordination in developing LFA, M & E plans, capacity building plans, MIS and monitoring of the projects/programs across SCALE Locations.

  • Coordination in evaluation designing, providing of technical inputs for conducting baseline, midline and end-line evaluations as well as for monitoring tools and strategies to ensure project implementation.

  • Work closely with program team for collation of data from different types of sources/surveys i.e. baseline/midline/end-line, outcome monitoring etc. and integrate with the organization’s MIS.

  • Conduct monitoring activities and check the quality of all data for completeness, consistency, correctness and authenticity of data and make amendments as required

  • Resolving issues pertaining to technical and functional aspects of MIS and ensuring timely and quality of data being entered in automated MIS system

  • Deliver high productivity and quality data in presentable mode by developing and running validation checks, integrity checks, resolving data discrepancies

  • Assist M&E team in developing data collection procedure/ guidelines and provide feedback to all staff involved in data collection on the quality of data.

  • Conduct trainings and capacity building of the programme team and to ensure the adherence of M&E framework/protocols/plans

  • Conduct process evaluation to understand the progress/outcome of the project and conduct data collation of field data on prescribed format as per SCALE project requirement

  • Extract and update secondary information from different sources like NFHS, DLHS, and Census etc. and maintain separate database.

  • Work closely with program team and provide regular support for updating & integrating data into the MIS. 

  • Manage large scale complex databases on different thematic areas

  • Provide inputs and or prepare monthly, quarterly, annual project progress, narrative, evaluation and other analytical reports for different programme/projects.

The Role –

  • To ensure high quality of program implementation in the districts allocated

  • Work with schools, employers, and Magic Bus teams for the smooth implementation of the programme and eventual job placement or transition higher education and trade skills training of students

  • Responsible to map the territory of the cluster and the communities, playgrounds, schools etc.

  • Responsible for collaborating with the Area Team to establish Area guidelines and procedures

  • Liaison with Local entities, communities, schools, government institutions / authorities

  • Scheduling and implementation of Magic Bus Program in the cluster as per the plan.

  • Effective management of documents and data control at cluster office.

  • Forecasting, budgeting and financial monitoring and management of the Cluster program.

  • Building the team in the district to seamlessly achieve magic bus program commitments and plans within the budgets.

  • Managing and be responsible for the performance and motivation of the team members.

The Role -

The Roll

  17. Broker and maintain partnerships with other skills training providers that can add value to the programme by receiving referrals of Magic Bus youth when their offer supports trainees to reach their targets.

  18. Monitor the effectiveness and quality of partner interventions and training delivery.

  19. Manage mentoring arrangements in the centre including matching youth to mentors and supporting mentors as required.

At present, owing to the COVID 19 outbreak, the person would be required to work from residence.

About Magic Bus

Founded in 1999, Magic Bus works with children and young people living in poverty, in India, taking them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods. We equip children and young people in the age group of 12 to 18, with the skills and knowledge they need to grow up and move out of poverty. Children on the Magic Bus programme successfully fend off destabilizers such as child marriage and child labour to complete school and become first-generation salary earners having secure careers in the organised sector.

Our youth-centered Livelihoods Programme connects the aspirations and potential of young people to available market opportunities. We build their employability skills and map job potential based on individual strengths and mobility. We work with support structures like parents, teachers, the community at large and local government institutions to ensure social, emotional and economic well-being for all young people living in that area. Our approach mobilises the entire ecosystem available to the child or young person to create transformational change in their lives.

Current Context

Magic Bus today impacts the lives of 4, 50,000 adolescents and more than 40,000 youths directly and thousands of families indirectly. Our Programmes have brought in a paradigm shift for the many families who earlier were constrained by financial compulsions, cultural norms and other adverse living conditions.

While our efforts could bring school drop-out rate to below 5%, child marriage is slowly edging for extinction in the communities where we work. We envision ourselves playing a significant role in touching lives of 1.6 million adolescents and 3, 00,000 youths directly via our Childhood to Livelihood programme by the end of 2023. The Director – Impact would Lead the research, monitoring and evaluation domain which form integral parts of the knowledge vertical (Program Development) at Magic Bus.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

  • The role holder will be responsible for upgrading & innovating research and development

  • Design and implement evaluation methodologies during the entire life cycle of Magic Bus program

  • Coordinate and facilitate internal as well as third party impact assessment of Magic Bus community interventions.

  • Identify technical and management resource persons/consultants for impact assessment / audits.

  • Build the academic platform and strengthen the science behind Magic Bus impact areas

  • Be the Knowledge Manager for Magic Bus

  • Design and conceptualize research methodologies for Magic Bus interventions covering target groups including children, youth and communities across developmental domain areas

  • Develop and implement a measurement framework for evaluation of programme.

  • Ensure that appropriate research is conducted that feeds into developing high quality programmes.

  • Create guidelines and policies around advocacy areas viz. Child Rights, Child Protection, Adolescent issues, Gender etc.

  • Look out for external consulting opportunities and marketing of Magic Bus approach to other organizations.

  • Carry out mandatory quality audit processes to ensure high quality on ground delivery.

  • Bring systemic change in government policies, schemes or programs through research studies and advocacy.

  • Active contribution to build the conceptual base of the academic platform and strengthen the science behind adolescent and livelihoods program impact areas

  • Play the role of a Knowledge Manager for Magic Bus

  • Custodian of preserving historical data and intelligence in the evolution of Magic Bus and establish processes to sustain these knowledge.

Team coordination

  1. Regional Programme Management teams – An ongoing collaboration within the team and create a conducive environment for sharing of information constructive criticism and suggestion alongside the regular progress of programmes.

  2. Sustainability /Fundraising team – Extend support to the Fundraising teams in creating descriptive as well as narrative reports among other things.

  3. Communications Team - To develop effective channel for internal as well as external communications, milestones achieved, success stories etc.

  4. Other support functions – to ensure adequate manpower, fund allocation & accuracy, technology enablement are in place.

Reporting

To Global Chief Executive Officer or as person nominated by him.

Mobility requirements:

The role would be based in Magic Bus Head office located in Vikhroli, Mumbai and would be required to travel in line with the requirements of the project , various external stakeholders like government agencies, funders etc. as well as for representing Magic Bus on outside fora if required from time to time.

As the head office is shut owing to the COVID 19 outbreak, the person would be required to work from residence.

Desired Competencies:

  • Knowledge research, evaluation and impact assessment across the domains in which Magic Bus operates.

  • Understand basic behavioural change theory and child psychology

  • Thorough knowledge of various research tools and techniques in the area of curriculum development

  • Knowledge of conceptualizing and developing curriculum in the domain of Education, Gender, Health, Life Skills, Leadership and Livelihood is desired. (Expertise in minimum 2-3 domain is a must)

About Magic Bus

Founded in 1999, Magic Bus works with children and young people living in poverty, in India, taking them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods. We equip children and young people in the age group of 12 to 18, with the skills and knowledge they need to grow up and move out of poverty. Children on the Magic Bus programme successfully fend off destabilizers such as child marriage and child labour to complete school and become first-generation salary earners having secure careers in the organised sector.

Our youth-centered Livelihoods Programme connects the aspirations and potential of young people to available market opportunities. We build their employability skills and map job potential based on individual strengths and mobility.We work with support structures like parents, teachers, the community at large and local government institutions to ensure social, emotional and economic well-being for all young people living in that area. Our approach mobilises the entire ecosystem available to the child or young person to create transformational change in their lives.

Current Context

Owing the the Covid 19 pandemic and its aftermath, livelihoods have been derailed, jobs and wages have been lost and there overall uncertainity about the future as lakhs of migrants return to their home states. This reverse tide means loss of family incomes and remittances severely constraining the ability of the families to invest in health, education and nutrition. There is a real danger of children dropping out to work or provide income and other support to the family. Equally, there is a possibility of the families moving for work and children not returning to school as expected or becoming increasingly irregular. Loss livelihood is threatening childhood and education itself, aspects core to Magic Bus vision and mission.

Recognising these emerging constraints and needs, Magic Bus is in the process of raising resources to restore livelihoods – provide facilitative support to households to recover, supplement incomes and continue to invest the education of their children. On the education side, this means focusing on learning continuity, ensuring fewer dropouts and facilitating regularity. As schools move to virtual learning, many children already lagging behind may fail to cope and may dropout owing to the lag as well or the sheer lack of routine as schools may not function on half the strength and not be available for in person interaction everyday.

In light of this, Magic Bus seeks the services of a Grant Management expert, who will be responsible for supporting it to achieve the ambitious but achievable targets for grant income for both the COVI19 Recovery projects as well as the conventional Life Skill Education & Livelihood Programmes.

This role will be responsible for prospect research to ensure a regular and reliable pipeline of new prospects, developing grant proposals, whilst also leveraging existing relationships. It will also be responsible for reporting on all grants including the management of data required for measurement and evaluation. While being responsible for a specific large grant and to coordinate and manage all aspects of the grant with inputs from relevant colleagues and senior members of the team, the potential candidate is also expected to ably contribute to the institutional fundraising team in achieving its targets and goals.

We’re looking for someone who is committed to helping achieve the income requirements, who has a proven eye for detail, an analytical nature and a flair for writing successful applications. This role requires the ability to react and respond creatively to the operational and financial needs of Magic Bus.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

  1. Relationship Management:

  • Maintain and develop a database of Grant Making agency contacts.

  • Proactively identify, Liaise and engage to ensure all external stakeholders and appropriate platforms for representing Magic Bus are leveraged.

  • Build and manage relationships with all internal stakeholders involved in the grant roll out and implementation ensuring that quality of financial reporting and expenditures are kept in check.

  1. Grant Administration & Reporting

  • Manage all aspects of the specific grant and its roll out including Preparation, management and monitoring of the Programme Implementation plan

  • Support conceptualization, development, review and finalisation of proposals and explore and pursue relevant grant opportunities that enable institutional fundraising along with concerned team/s

  • Maintain a timetable of deadlines to ensure donors receive reports and other correspondence as required as well as Lead and ensure quality reporting for the funder at required intervals.

  • Proactively develop internal and external channels of communication to identify and share challenges as well as celebrate success.

  • Prepare regular internal update reports for the team and maintain momentum to the project and ensure each milestone is recorded and applauded

  • Leverage the work done under a grant for other similar grant proposals by proactively developing and sharing slides/ documents that enable fundraisers in the organization to optimally leverage this grant

  • To contribute to the Head of Fundraising & Communication’s management reports and updates on grant fundraising for leadership team at Magic Bus.

Team coordination

  1. Director, Impact and the Impact team - To find ways to represent and communicate results/ outcomes as well as support and contribute to the effective creation of a monitoring and evaluation framework for the Magic Bus.

  2. Sustainability /Fundraising team - To ensure prompt and appropriate acknowledgement of all grant income and that all information relating to it is accurate, up to date and well organized and also provide other feasible support as required to the whole fundraising team in line with experience.

  3. Communications Team - To develop effective channel for internal as well as external communications, milestones achieved, success stories etc.

  4. Other support functions – to ensure adequate manpower, fund allocation & accuracy, technology enablement are in place.

To Head – Learning & Development with administrative reporting to Senior Consultant – Recovery & resilience on specific tasks as defined from time to time.

  10. Adhere to the ISO processes with relation to the ISO requirements in capacity building

  11. Ensure translated curriculum and programme strategies are communicated and followed project location

  12. Ensure quality translation of curriculum and assessment sheets for use within the project.

  13. Extensive travel within districts on regular intervals to on- field sessions across regions to assess quality of inputs going to adolescents and stakeholders from community.

  14. Consistently provide rich field data to PD for enhancing the trainings and programme.

  15. Generate training reports with highlighting concerns and best practices to be shared during the quarterly meets.

Competences (must have):

  • Expertise in capacity building approaches, training strategies, facilitation, coaching and mentoring preferably with teachers

  • Knowledge of sports and games, physical activity, delivery and output.

  • Knowledge of child development and community programmes

  • Familiarity with social issues like child rights, gender discrimination, education, among others.

  • Deliver a structured induction programme to each group of youth starting on the Livelihood programme

  • Lead all training in the Livelihood Centres for the Magic Bus Livelihood programme, which delivers skill training to youth and supports them into jobs and further education and placements

  • Deliver Sports for Development activities to youth using Magic Bus curriculum and in house resources to engage youth successfully and enhance their learning

  • Deliver training content developed by Magic Bus National Programme Development Team and tailor this where necessary to the local context whilst ensuring session outcomes are delivered.

  • Ensure training outcomes are achieved in each session and youth receive consistent messages throughout all training interventions

  • Design an effective Livelihood Centre training timetable with the Centre Coordinator and ensure that this is constantly monitored and updated to enable youth to access the training they need

  • Apply and continuously develop innovative training techniques to make training more effective, fun and interactive

  • Undertake comprehensive needs assessments 1:1 with youth to identify their strengths & limitations, training and life skills needs and overall targets for the programme

  • Work in partnership with the Centre Coordinator or specialist career counsellors during the needs assessment to ensure youth have the impartial information, advice and guidance that empowers them to make positive choices about potential careers

  • Act as the lead worker in the first phase of youth’s engagement with Magic Bus Livelihood programme and ensure all youth receive the full and proper offer during this time

  • Using the needs assessment and guidance findings to support each youth to draw up a Personal Development Plan that contains the training activities and targets that they will work towards

  • Support youth to achieve the skills training, mentoring and employer activities outlined in their individual Personal Development Plans in partnership with the Placement and Partnership Officers who focus on referrals to employers and training institutions

  • Lead the matching of youth to mentors and support mentors to deliver their roles successfully.

  • Engage and motivate youth positively at all times ensuring youth are aware of their weekly timetables and attend the correct sessions

  • Deliver a sharp focus on all training and counselling contributing to successful youth placement, training or further education and being able to sustain these for 6 months

  • Contribute to mapping institutions (government/NGO/private and corporate foundations) that provide skills training opportunities in the local areas
