Magic Bus Bangladesh

Magic Bus began working in Bangladesh in May 2017.

Magic Bus works with children and young people living in poverty, taking them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods. We equip young people with the skills and knowledge they need to grow up and move out of poverty.

At a glance

  • Thakurgaon district is situated in the extreme north of Bangladesh and has an education system that is weaker than in more accessible parts of the country.
  • The national literacy rate of Bangladesh is 61.5% (UNESCO data) while in Thakurgaon it is only 49.43% (Male 53.00% and Female 44.40%).
  • The school attendance rate is 56.70% for 5 to 14 years’ age group.
  • Children on the Magic Bus programme complete school, and fend off destabilisers such as child marriage and child labour and become first-generation salary earners.
  • We work with support structures: parents, the community at large and local institutions to ensure results in social, emotional and economic well-being for all young people living in that area. Our approach mobilises the entire ecosystem available to the child or young person to create transformational change in their lives.
Since 2017, a total of 82 adolescent groups have been formed across 10 schools in Thakurgaon. Our adolescent programme reaches out to 2052 children across these schools.

Outcomes

Although fairly new, we have managed to achieve a few significant milestones:

  • 2044 students are now regular in the schools that we work in.
  • 3453 parents are aware of the importance of education after several rounds of awareness-building through household visits and meetings.
  • One of our schools, Lohagara Secondary School, got the best school award for performance in the secondary examination in Pirgonj Upazila that is under Thakurgaon District Education Office.
