Life skills are the abilities and competencies that enable individuals to effectively navigate and adapt to the challenges of everyday life. These skills encompass a broad range of ‘psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that help make informed decisions, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathize with others and cope with and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner'.
With more than 253 million adolescents below the age of 18, India’s labour force is expected to have an influx of over 12 million young people annually for the next two decades. However, factors such as caste, gender, poverty, and location act as barriers to realizing their full potential. There is a growing emphasis on imparting life skills to enable young people to break out of poverty. Life skills help adolescents recognize their power and potential.
Research indicates a positive correlation between life skills and increased attendance levels, enhanced classroom behaviour and improved academic achievement. By incorporating life skills education within school curricula, the programme aims to provide adolescents with the knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills needed for active participation in society and lifelong learning.
Developing life skills among young people is critical for addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By imparting life skills, we enable youth to actively participate in society, promote social inclusion, and contribute to sustainable development.
The Magic Bus life skills framework covers three dimensions Cognitive, Emotional, and Social. Under these dimensions, there are eleven essential life skills which enable young people to become more resilient and lead to higher self-efficacy in the face of life’s challenges.
