In an Eastern Indian village, a group of excited and curious adolescents gathered in an open field. Using chalk lines and wooden sticks, they created stones in the shapes of triangles and circles, stretching as far as they could see.
They were then divided into teams and set out on a remarkable mission. They crossed the imaginary river of flames, hand in hand, stepping strategically on the playful stones in a game called the ‘Five Passes Activity.’ Underneath the fun, they were learning vital life skills. They honed their communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, unknowingly embracing the idea of a growth mindset.
Among the participants, one girl who faced slow learning challenges in school and struggled with confidence was Mrinalini. This game wasn't merely enjoyable for her; it served as a transformative journey.
Within classrooms, you'll find students with a wide range of learning profiles, diverse grasping abilities, and unique interests. Educators must develop an approach that embraces this diversity while delivering lessons. It plays a crucial role in fostering a collaborative learning environment and achieving truly significant learning outcomes.
However, in a nation where millions of adolescents and youth confront formidable challenges, and where securing the fundamental right to education is itself a significant hurdle, a recurring question emerges: Is there room for individuals with slower learning paces and challenging backgrounds? Do they receive the necessary support from schools and teachers?
This is the mission of Magic Bus India Foundation – to provide young people of India with a collaborative learning environment through sports and raise awareness about the critical importance of life skills. One remarkable story that exemplifies the impact of this support is Mrinalini's journey.

Mrinalini is a 15-year-old from the Latakata area of Guwahati in Eastern India. Her parents, Kalpana and Indramohan, work as tailors to support their family through a small clothing shop. Mrinalini has a deep passion for painting, singing, and dancing, and she actively participates in Magic Bus sessions. Her creativity even led her to create posters about water conservation during Magic Bus Summer Camp sessions.
Initially, Mrinalini encountered difficulties during Magic Bus sessions, specifically within the "Sit Breathe Think" (SBT) component, which is a critical part of the session structure.
SBT is an essential part of the session structure. It provides a space for participants to reflect, discuss, and learn about the targeted skill for the session, helping them apply it to real-life situations and develop strategies for facing challenges.
It was during one of these SBT sessions that the Magic Bus team promptly noticed Mrinalini's hesitation to attend school. As a result, they conducted home visits to delve deeper into the underlying reasons. It was revealed that Mrinalini had faced challenges as a slow learner since her early years. Her slower pace of learning impacted her confidence negatively. Unfortunately, her struggles went unnoticed by her schoolteachers, who, rather than offering support, recommended that her parents withdraw her from school.
With this insight, the Magic Bus team initiated discussions with Mrinalini's schoolteachers in her presence. Consequently, the teachers offered support, leading to substantial improvements in Mrinalini's participation, confidence, and academic performance. The activity-based life skills, such as the 'river of flames' sessions, played a pivotal role in her transformation. She no longer hesitates to seek help from her classmates, teachers, or friends when she encounters difficulties, which has enhanced her problem-solving abilities, self-assuredness, and future aspirations.
"Today, I understand that people have different grasping abilities and learning pace, and I no longer feel ashamed. I'm grateful to Magic Bus for bringing this awareness to my school and community. I now excel in teamwork at school and have grand aspirations to support children like me in my community,” said Mrinalini.
