Bridging Worlds: Sahil's Path from Rural Roots to Retail Aisles

Game On: Explore 5 Playful Pedagogical Approaches

In the bustling streets of Ghatkopar, Mumbai, 21-year-old Sahil Mohite's journey from a serene Konkan village to the dynamic retail landscape is a testament to the transformative power of life and employability skills with opportunity.

Sahil hails from a farming family in Konkan, where the struggles were as vast as the fields we cultivated. His parents toiled in their field all day, but the income they reaped was still insufficient. “Meeting our basic needs was a constant struggle for my family as our combined annual income was only Rs 1,00,000.” Sahil shares, reminiscing about his modest beginnings.

Determined to help his family secure financial stability and improve their standard of living, Sahil moved to Mumbai in hopes of building a different future. He moved into a chawl in the heart of Ghatkopar with his elder brother, who was also unemployed then. While Sahil was desperate to secure employment, he was clueless about the formal workforce. On the recommendation of a friend, Sahil joined the Magic Bus India Foundation Livelihood Programme. His journey unfolded with determination and a thirst for skills. “Magic Bus was a turning point in my life. It's where I found the support and guidance I needed.”

Always eager to develop his skills, Sahil could be identified as the smiling face sitting in the front-row. The sessions that focused on honing his interview skills, communication, and team-building abilities, proved instrumental in Sahil's growth. From a neutral participant to an active learner, he embraced every opportunity to improve. "The exposure visit was an eye-opener. It showed me the reality and helped me understand the Retail sector," Sahil reflects.

The journey wasn't easy, but every challenge was a step closer to his dreams, and his biggest hurdle was communication. Fearful of being judged for his rural roots, he was initially hesitant. As sessions progressed, Sahil began to open up and interact with his peers. Slowly but surely, his communication skills improved, and his self-confidence soared. "I started doing self-study, submitted assignments on time, and actively participated in every session," he shares.

Guided by the Magic Bus Trainers, Sahil faced his first interview at Reliance and emerged victorious in the very first round. Today, he stands tall as a Customer Care Executive, contributing to the vibrant retail landscape and earning a monthly income of Rs 12,000. Sahil now handles walk-in customers at Reliance Footwear. “This programme helped me bridge the gap, transforming my fear into confidence. They not only taught me skills but also groomed me to be presentable. Magic Bus not only changed my life but also my family's.”

Sahil's story exemplifies the impact of skilling programmes like Magic Bus’ Livelihood Programme, which play a vital role in addressing the youth employment challenge in India. When underserved young people receive the support and knowledge that is essential for today’s world of formal employment, they can break through and contribute meaningfully to the workforce.

Sahil's story shines as a beacon of hope, echoing the sentiment that with perseverance and the right support, anyone can rewrite their destiny.
