In the colourful tapestry of India, education is critical to social and economic development for all. Unfortunately, the current education statistics are alarming. According to a 2023 UNESCO Report#, 250 million young people are not in school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. These numbers only reaffirm the pressing need to ensure educational access to all.
A multitude of factors impacts the number of young people in education today, including financial instability, low family support and a lack of access to education. These challenges often push adolescents from underserved communities to frequently skip school and fall behind in their learning levels. As a result, the rate of school drop-out increases and alongside it, so do societal issues like child labour, early marriage and gender inequalities. We cannot solve the education crisis through traditional methods. It’s high time we reimagine and reform education.
Magic Bus India Foundation stands at the forefront of this transformative journey. Our Adolescent Programmes work to ensure that every adolescent in India has the support they need to complete their education - irrespective of their economic background. The pathway to achieving this ambitious goal is imparting life skills like Problem-Solving, Communication, Self-Management, Decision Making, Assertiveness and more. When equipped with intangible life skills learnings, adolescents can face life’s challenges with resilience and work with determination towards completing their education.
Magic Bus nurtures learning and positive development through life skills education. We recognised that a systemic change was needed to transform the education landscape and take life skills education to millions of young people. As the majority of India’s schools are government-run, we launched our Government Partnership Programme as a strategy to scale up life skills education across the nation – keeping in-line with the National Education Policy, 2020. Leading the charge of delivering life skills education are the unsung heroes – our government schoolteachers.
Our Government Partnership Programme is focused on the capacity-building of teachers. We equip teachers with the tools to impart life skills education inside and outside the classroom. Integrating life skills into the curriculum fosters a dynamic classroom environment where teachers act as mentors and guide adolescents through a journey of holistic development. As teachers become facilitators of personal growth, the classroom becomes a space where meaningful connections are forged, creating a positive and supportive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
This shift away from traditional education approaches elevates the engagement level between teachers and students and enhances academic performance. This collaboration between teachers and students becomes a cornerstone for developing well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also socially and emotionally adept. Teachers become instrumental in instilling confidence and resilience in adolescents – a direct correlation to building aspirations within vulnerable young people from underserved communities who are otherwise tethered to a life in poverty. Magic Bus’ life skills programmes have displayed a proven impact, with adolescents recording a 21.8% increase in school regularity and a20% increase in their aspiration to complete education.
Magic Bus India Foundation’s Government Partnership Programme is a testament to the transformative power of Quality Education - a commitment embedded in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Currently, the programme is being run in eight states – Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Odisha. To date, Magic Bus has trained over 14,600 teachers from more than 11,800 schools and we will impact approximately 6.7 million adolescents by 2027.
By integrating life skills into mainstream education, we are developing future-ready adolescents and creating a more engaged, aspirational, and harmonious society. This is how we are scripting a brighter future and igniting generations across India.
